- Hybrid Cloud and Azure Integration: The new version simplifies the process of connecting on-premises servers to Azure through a user-friendly wizard for Azure Arc. This integration enables features like a new hotpatching subscription service for on-premises servers, which allows security updates to be installed without a system reboot. A pay-as-you-go licensing option is also available through Azure Arc.
- Performance and Scalability: Windows Server 2025 introduces significant performance improvements, particularly in Hyper-V virtualization and storage. It supports larger virtual machines with up to 240 terabytes of RAM and 2048 virtual processors. The OS also has optimized NVMe storage performance, which can deliver up to 60% more storage IOPS compared to Windows Server 2022 on identical systems.
- Management and Administration: The operating system has a modernized user interface that resembles Windows 11 and includes native tools like DTrace and the Winget package manager. Upgrades from Windows Server 2012 R2 and later are supported. The OpenSSH server-side component is now installed by default.
- Advanced Multi-layer Security: This includes "Secured-core" server capabilities to protect against firmware vulnerabilities and advanced malware. It also supports technologies like TPM 2.0, UEFI Secure Boot, and DNS over HTTPS (DoH) for enhanced security.
- Hybrid Capabilities with Azure: Windows Server 2022 makes it easier to extend on-premises environments to Azure. Features like Azure Arc integration allow for centralized management of servers, whether they are on-premises or in the cloud.
- Flexible Application Platform: The OS offers significant improvements for Windows containers, including smaller image sizes for faster downloads and simplified network policy implementation. It also has enhanced support for .NET applications and containerization tools.
